Hudson River

Heading up the Hudson River we had to stay port. The Fleet was in and you were not allowed within 500 feet of any Navy Ship. Security was in full force; the NYC Police, Coast Guard, Harbor Police and State Police. Helicopters all over the place. It was quite exciting and a challenge to navigate around the lower bay. We could feel the excitement when we passed by the Statue of Liberty, " Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearing to breath free". We saw Governors Island, Ellis Island and the many Circle Line Cruises. Once passed the George Washington Bridge the traffic disappeared, for miles we were alone on the river. The scenery was beautiful. On port it was all high cliffs of green and countryside. The Hudson is affected by tides and we were pushed upstream by the current. We passed the Tappan Zee Bridge and decided to spend the afternoon in Haverstraw. It was a wonderful day for our 1st day out.
